They tell Mr. Markham, that Mr. Russell's book is interesting and will be published exactly how he sent it. The other two didn't seem worth publishing on the editorial page because they were without opinion or comment. Which didn't make them interesting or valuable. They also enclosed a circular about a new book, with a title that should appeal to everyone.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
